A refined watchmaking technique

The Aubergine dial stands out with a striking design, featuring a prominent Roman numeral VI set with 11 diamonds for a touch of refined elegance. Its sunray finish creates subtle and sophisticated light reflections, enhancing the beauty of the Oyster Perpetual collection.

This effect is achieved through precise brushing techniques that form fine grooves radiating outward from the centre of the dial. These engravings allow light to disperse evenly across the surface, producing a soft, luminous glow that shifts naturally with wrist movement.

Once the sunray texture is complete, the dial colour is applied using advanced methods such as Physical Vapour Deposition or electroplating. A final protective layer of varnish is then added, giving the dial its depth, richness, and polished finish.

The fluted bezel is one of the most distinctive elements of Rolex design, representing elegance and precision. Originally, its fluting served a functional role—it helped secure the bezel firmly onto the case, contributing to the watch’s waterproof construction.

This detail matched the fluting on the case back, which was also tightly screwed into place using specialized Rolex tools to ensure optimal sealing and protection.

Over time, this practical feature evolved into a defining aesthetic signature. Today, the fluted bezel stands as a symbol of Rolex heritage and craftsmanship, crafted in gold on the Datejust 31 as a mark of distinction and timeless sophistication.
