Chocolate Dial

A Watchmaking Technique

The chocolate dial showcases refined watchmaking craftsmanship, enhanced with diamonds set in 18 ct gold settings. Its rich tone is elevated by the signature sunray finish, creating delicate and elegant light reflections.

This effect is achieved through masterful brushing techniques that form fine grooves radiating outward from the centre of the dial, giving it a structured and luminous surface.

As light moves across these engravings, it is evenly diffused, producing a subtle glow that shifts with wrist movement. Once the sunray finish is complete, the chocolate colour is applied using advanced Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) or electroplating techniques.

A final layer of varnish enhances depth, brilliance, and durability, completing the dial with a smooth and polished finish.

Fluted Bezel

A Rolex Signature

The fluted bezel is a distinctive Rolex design element that embodies both heritage and refinement. Originally, its fluting served a functional purpose, allowing the bezel to be screwed onto the case to help ensure the watch’s waterproofness.

This design mirrored the fluted case back, which was also securely fastened using specialised Rolex tools to maintain a sealed construction.

Over time, the fluting evolved from a technical feature into a signature aesthetic detail. Today, crafted in gold, it stands as a mark of distinction and elegance on the Datejust 31.
