Dark Grey Dial

A Watchmaking Technique

The dark grey dial reflects refined watchmaking craftsmanship, enhanced by the signature sunray finish used across the Oyster Perpetual collection. This technique creates delicate light reflections that give the dial depth, contrast, and a subtle radiance.

It is achieved through masterful brushing methods that form fine grooves radiating outward from the centre of the dial, producing a precisely structured surface.

As light moves across these engravings, it is evenly diffused, creating a soft glow that shifts with wrist movement. The dial also features a large Roman numeral VI set with 11 diamonds, adding a refined decorative highlight.

Once the sunray finish is complete, the dark grey colour is applied using advanced Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) or electroplating techniques. A final layer of varnish enhances depth, brilliance, and durability, completing the dial with a smooth and polished finish.

Fluted Bezel

A Rolex Signature

The fluted bezel is a distinctive Rolex design element that represents both heritage and refinement. Originally, its fluting served a functional purpose, allowing the bezel to be screwed onto the case to help ensure the watch’s waterproofness.

This design mirrored the fluted case back, which was also securely fastened using specialised Rolex tools to maintain a sealed construction.

Over time, the fluting evolved from a technical feature into a signature aesthetic detail. Today, crafted in gold, it stands as a mark of distinction and elegance on the Datejust 31.
