The dark grey dial features a sophisticated sunray finish that creates subtle, elegant light reflections across its surface. This effect is achieved through precise brushing techniques that form fine grooves radiating outward from the center of the dial.

A distinctive detail is the large Roman numeral VI set with 11 diamonds, adding a refined touch of brilliance and exclusivity to the design.

As light interacts with the engraved surface, it is evenly diffused, producing a soft glow that shifts with wrist movement and enhances depth and visual character. Once the sunray finish is complete, the dial colour is applied using advanced methods such as Physical Vapour Deposition or electroplating, followed by a protective varnish for a smooth, polished finish.

Originally, the fluting on the Oyster bezel served a functional purpose, allowing it to be securely screwed onto the case to help ensure the watch’s waterproof performance.

This design was mirrored on the fluted case back, which was also tightly fastened using specialized Rolex tools to create a secure seal. Over time, this practical engineering detail evolved into a defining aesthetic feature and a hallmark of Rolex identity.

Today, the fluted bezel stands as a mark of distinction. Crafted in gold on the Datejust 31, it enhances the watch with a refined touch of luxury while preserving its timeless and iconic design language.
