Slate Dial

A refined watchmaking technique

This dial is enhanced with a large Roman numeral VI set with 11 diamonds, adding a refined touch of brilliance and elegance. The sunray finish creates delicate light reflections, a signature feature seen across many Oyster Perpetual dials.

It is achieved through precise brushing techniques that form fine grooves radiating outward from the centre of the dial. These engravings allow light to spread evenly across the surface, producing a soft, sophisticated glow that subtly shifts with wrist movement.

Once the sunray texture is complete, the dial colour is applied using advanced methods such as Physical Vapour Deposition or electroplating. A final protective layer of varnish is then added, giving the dial its depth, clarity, and polished finish.

Fluted Bezel

A signature of Rolex craftsmanship

The fluted bezel is one of the most recognizable elements of Rolex design, symbolizing precision and timeless elegance. Originally, its fluting served a functional purpose—it allowed the bezel to be securely screwed onto the case, helping to ensure the watch’s waterproof construction.

This detail was mirrored on the case back, which was also tightly fastened using specialized Rolex tools to guarantee complete sealing and protection.

Over time, this practical feature evolved into a defining aesthetic signature. Today, the fluted bezel stands as a mark of Rolex identity and refinement, crafted in gold on the Datejust 31 as a symbol of enduring distinction.

To preserve the lasting beauty of its pink gold timepieces, Rolex developed and patented its own unique 18 ct Everose gold. This exclusive alloy is produced in Rolex’s in-house foundry, ensuring full control over quality and consistency.
