Reference 16520 – Zenith Era
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has long been regarded as the undisputed king of Rolex sports watches. Originally conceived as a racing chronograph, the Daytona reached a pivotal moment in 1987 when Rolex introduced its first self-winding chronograph. At the time, Rolex did not yet produce an in-house automatic chronograph movement, and therefore fitted the watch with a modified Zenith El Primero caliber—giving rise to what collectors now call the “Zenith Daytona.”
Produced for approximately 12 years, the stainless steel reference 16520 was offered with either white or black dials. Among early black-dial examples, a rare and unintended production flaw caused the originally beige sub-dials to darken over time. This phenomenon was later identified by legendary watch dealer Osvaldo Patrizzi, after whom these dials are now named.
What defines a true Patrizzi dial is not merely discoloration, but the depth, uniformity, and richness of the brown tone. The most desirable examples exhibit a deep, chocolate-colored patina—far removed from lighter or uneven aging that does not meet true Patrizzi standards. Notably, this effect appears only on watches produced until the mid-1990s, after which Rolex seemingly corrected the issue.
This particular example dates to 1994–1995 and represents an outstanding Patrizzi Daytona. The black tritium dial remains mint, with evenly aged dark brown sub-dials displaying a rich, consistent patina. The original tritium hands match perfectly, creating a harmonious and highly attractive aesthetic.
The case and bracelet are in excellent condition, retaining strong lines and definition, with minimal wear for its age. This is a superb example for collectors seeking an authentic, high-quality Patrizzi Daytona with true character and presence.
If you are looking for a Patrizzi, don’t settle for light discoloration—this is the real chocolate dial collectors search for.
